I run a 5 and the cook a 4.5, we both swing the new 14" elites. Paid for mine in 9 days last season.

I'm going elite rounds this season - 1 x 11" (keeping  1 x ML 11") so we have 2 x 11", 2 x 14" and going to buy 1 x 18" when it come out.

That should keep us going for most of our ground we prospect!

Will report back at end of season. I prospect with 3 guys who swing 7's. Be a good  comparison after 7 months!

Despite my ill-fated love affair with a 7000, I doubt that a 5000 will beat a 7000 amongst all things. But I do know from testing that we witnessed instances where a standard 5000 with an 11 inch mono heard signals on which the 7000 registered nothing.???? FIIK!

However, it all comes down to how much cash ya wanna splash and how much either machine owes you vs how much it can return on the investment. But a 5000 with an Elite or Evo coil comes bloody close to a 7000 in gold found. So if the 5000 is less cash cost than the 7000, then that's a better investment. But if one has cash to splash and it's yer first detector, the 7000 would be the way to go. JMO.

So it's all a matter of outlay vs return. For me and what I'm doing now, I don't require a 7000 anymore. So the cash is better in the local bottle shop!

MMmmm interesting scenario i've been on field trips where the gold was small,
ie 0.1 - 0.3 the sevens beeped, the 5's didn't but the 23's did ??
so were the 5's not tuned into fine gold.!! or are the sevens and 23's more sensitive on small gold??

Simple answer,,,,,,,

On small gold and assuming similar depth AND a depth that a 2300 can "see":

First prize - SDC2300

Second prize - GPZ7000

Third prize - 5000 with a CT Elite or similar on it.

There are many other factors when discussing which is better overall. But that wasn't the question was it?

Once the small stuff gets a bit deeper the SDC falls away and the 7000 takes over. The 5000 still trails - slightly. (Mind you I've been surprised at the depth that can be achieved by the 2300!)

ON THE OTHER HAND,,,,,,,,,I had a situation where a 2300 heard, quiet clearly, three small targets on the surface (one may have been barely covered by sand but was essentially on top). I had a swing with my 7000 and no matter what I tried I couldn't get even a faint rise in the threshold. Neither could my mate that tried with the same 7000. So on smalls that aren't deep the 2300 has an advantage over a 7000. The 5000 wasn't tried in this case because I didn't have the CT Elite at the time. All three targets were gold - bloody small gold but gold they were!

BTW - it was at this point in my "7000 career" after two months of farting around with it and listening to the experts, I threw it in the back of the truck and sold the effin thing. I was ropeable and getting shit from mates, just laughing at it, was just too much.

BUT - then came "The Iron Ring" closely followed by "The fix-it patch". I dunno what happened after that as I got a good offer only two days after the above farcical display and by that time, it was long gone.

Good riddance I say. But my circumstances are different to most swingers.

They say patience is a virtue but I reckon 10 grand in the bank is a greater one!

I got rid of mine about two weeks after the "Iron Ring" came out and about three months before "The Softarse Patch" came out. Premature maybe? I can only make a decision on the evidence before me on the day and the ring didn't make much difference IMO. By that time I'd was reaching the end of my rope anyway. I had an offer only three days later and I hadn't even advertised it by that time.

In hindsight, it all worked out the best for me anyway. I'm on patch now that will probably last me till the end of my bippin' career. I'd nearly reached the end anyway and the 7000 was a last ditch attempt to freshen it up a bit and keep me going a bit longer. That idea failed.

So, a few days after the sale, I was hanging around thinking," Aaaw stuff it, where to from here?". I was heading home to sell the lot - van, Chev, detectors, dryblower, dozer, the whole shooting match. THE END.

But out of the blue, I then got an offer I couldn't refuse. I had the gear and the knowledge to do it, I didn't need a 7000 on the job, I have a lifetime tenure, I have no rents or rates as it's not my lease. It's pre Native Title Mining Lease, no AHS issues, I have dryblower, a loader, a dozer, 2 wet plants - one big one small, a water bore pumping potable water and shops 40 kms away.

No walking all day, no sweatski, no hassles, no warden's court, no lease pegging, no probs,,,,,,,,and no effin' 7000 to give me a headache. Will I make a million dollars? That's unlikely. Will I have a load of fun? Definitely. No contest,,,,,,,,,,,I'm in!

BTW - I don't agree when you say a 2300 is better than a 7000 on "not-deep" small stuff. I can only speak for the 7000 I had and my 7000 was a HoS - PROVEN. On the other hand, the 2300 is a little killer. Like I said on the test bed - the 7000 went clean over 2 big targets that 5000 heard clearly. That's been my experience. It may not be yours.

I suppose if you're going over old patches or in the adjacent vicinity of those old patches, then the 7000 may be the one for the job. But a brand new patch will sound off with a 5000 with an 11 inch mono and more so with a CT Elite. The 5000 will get the bulk. If you have a 7000, and you want the dregs, then the 7000 is welcome to "go crumbing" on anything I miss. I'm too old to be going 19 hours a day like your mate. The easy stuff will do me as it always has done. But there's not much easy stuff left anymore to a detector. I suppose I got spoiled back in 1994 when 3 ounces a day was about the average. I only had to swing for 6 weeks a year to get what now takes me a cuppla years!!

Even the SD2000 only ever got the crumbs left by the old VLF machines. Those "crumbs" were VERY substantial "crumbs" though! I don't see that same enormous difference these days when comparing a 7000 with a 5000. There is some for sure,,,,,,,,,,,,,but is it worth that much money to me?,,,and I mean TO ME. IMO - no it wasn't last year and it certainly isn't now.


The cash I have now enables a little sideline in buying and selling yella. It pays for the beer.

(Tell Minelab to call me when they make a machine that makes gold instead of making me angry! I doub't I'll ever buy another machine anyway. The novelty of gold has just about worn off. )

Make sure your prescription spec's are up to date when using the 2300 Les because Nosralt specked a piece of gold one day and the 2300 didn't want to know about it
