there has been problems with some punters not replacing the battery end cap properly.

if your machine turns on and off by itself as u r detecting then this is the problem.

this photo explains it ..

closing the battery cap Empty Re: closing the battery cap

i was experiencing this issue ray last trip, got to the point of being unusable at one time. i was being very careful to align things b4 assembly as shown in the pic and stretched the springs a tiny amount but to fix it I ended up wrapping a layer of first aid plaster tape around the batteries and all good, seems if i hit a rock when swinging the batteries moved enough to loose their connection, the tape fixed that.

closing the battery cap Empty Battery bumps

Post by Dozer Tue 31 Mar 2015, 5:52 am

I was plagued with this issue over the weekend. In my opinion the issue is the batteries are able to "bounce". What I think is happening is the junction between the two batteries is breaking and resetting.
It used to happen with old transistor radios from time to time and the best way to solve it was to add a copper washer between the batteries. Stretching the springs is not a good thing as they will (dare I say it) spring back to their original position over time and they will have lost even more tension in the process.
I will test the theory over Easter if I get a chance to get out. Raining here in Leo at the moment so time will tell.

I have never had the issue, maybe i am lucky i don't know but as soon as i was aware of a potential issue i used more caution, i have the supplied Tenergy batteries, when loading the batteries i always put the detector on it's side to avoid dropping them onto the internal springs, i then sit the detector on it's end and carefully push the battery compartment lid down square and continue to hold it till it's in the locked position.

I don't own an SDC2300 but it's not a good thing for any electronic item to be subjected to switching "on & off" every few seconds. It'll bugger up eventually. But "bippers" are nothing if not "improvisators" eh!

My mate told me that what they found was to just clean the contacts of the battery with some wet & dry or fine emery paper and never had the problem again...

Righto here is the latest on this issue, hot of the press that I use to print the $3 bills.

After the frustration I had last weekend I noticed that the charger was only charging 3 batteries. So I swapped them around and all was well. Once they had finished I lined them up on the bench and put a straight edge over them. Sure enuff the offending battery was lower on the positive tip than t'others.

So I marked it with a big black cross and made sure that I only put it in first on the positive spring.
All weekend and zero restarts.

I could shave some of the cover off, or I could do lots of other things but being the lazy slob that I am, I will stick with the X marking the spot.

It could be that my problem with restarting was different to others but I somehow doubt it.
Anyway it could be worth a go for those that are suffering from this issue.

I also noted that the outer two slots in the charger have the positive plate more "prominent" than the centre two, so of course that is where the black x'ed battery goes and everything works fine.

Smallest piece found so far is .06 gram. Todays effort was 11 pieces for 2.4 gms in a short spell of 2 hours. Won't get rich but I also don't have to dig much either.

Wrapping tape around the batteries a few times holds them in place as the diameter is not the same as normal c size.
