Tried it. I'm no good at it. Bought a breadmaker. Buy crackers, naan bread, wraps instead. Dampers nice when fresh. A day old and it makes a good caravan chock.

Nice if ya have the time and the energy. Me? After a days work and six beers I just eat my spare wheel with tomato sauce on it and go to bed!

They turn out far better and remain moist longer if you do NOT place the oven on a bed of coals. Place it on bare ground and cover with the hot coals.
The options are many;
Blow Fly Damper (added raisins)
Bake Bean Damper
Peanut Butter Damper
The list is endless, experiment with your own favourite additive.
Remember to add a few minutes cooking time if your additives contain moisture.

when we get set up we will have to get Uncle Les up into the Pilbara for some culinary delights--hope some of u buggers out there can cook.

Just google COCIA, go to the forum and you will see more damper and other bloody good camp oven recipes than you could poke a stick at.
Some of the blokes on there often cook for up to 50-60 at a time in camp ovens 2' across.
The occasional camp oven gatherings (COG) are great events, everything from road kill to individual garlic prawns.
Everyone makes an interesting cooking contribution and the port consumed after is legendary.
Been on that particular track and enjoying it for quite a little while now.
Nightjar has it well nailed too.
